house venter
kenrock country esate, hout bay, cape town
Kenrock Country Estate comprises 94 houses situated in an indigenous landscaped environment, set on the foothills of Table Mountain in Hout Bay, where the rising slopes offer vistas of the valley below and the Table Mountain range above. The focal points of the landscape area are forests, dams and wetlands within the private open space of the estate. The new residences form part of the new residences which had to conform to a very detailed architectural design manual. Although there are obvious restrictions, some of them quite limiting, the idea behind the development was to strive to create an environment where the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. The intention of the design manual is to ensure that the overall character of the development is identifiable by the use of certain unifying external elements. The site for House Venter is situated on the northern extremities of Kenrock Estate and as such is one of the few sites that offer a distant sea view of the bay and the Kommetjie lighthouse beyond. The very steep and irregular shaped site informed the design and shaped the building on four separate levels, each staggered back, respecting the natural contours of the land. The result is a building that has a natural flow, is completely private and sheltered from the summer southeasterly winds. In the main living areas on the second level, the interior and exterior transition is seamless with the level lawn, pool and courtyard all integrated with the living areas. Sun is controlled by a series of sunscreens and pergolas. House Venter was meticulously detailed in every respect. A total of ten individual homes on the Estate were designed by the practice varying in size from 400sq.m to 1000sq.m.
